He recalls growing up in a segregated society where prejudice, barriers to education, and economic inequity kept African Americans marginalized. Despite these challenges, Hearns sees the guiding hand of God throughout his journey, from his early years working in the cotton fields to his eventual rise as a pastor, engineer, and politician.
