This is National Police Appreciation Week. It's time to thank those individuals who put their lives on the line so we can sleep at night. With all of the talk about defunding the police and focusing on the extremely few who violate trust, it's time to say thanks to the good guys.
We need more police and not fewer. Officers are retiring at a rapid rate as Boomers and older Gen-Xers hit retirement age. That's in addition to officers in large cities who have given up.
Most communities in the country outside of the big metros appreciate their police officers. Crime rates are impacted by the lack of effective policing and prosecution. This is not a political topic.
