Description

Message based on 2 Kings 2:1-14
How do we recognize greatness in the service of our Lord?  This week, Tallowood’s first pastor, Russell Dilday made his journey home to be with the Lord at the age of 92.  After he completed ten years at Tallowood, he went to serve as Pastor of Second Ponce de Leon Baptist in Atlanta.  From there he became President of Southwestern Seminary at the height of its enrollment and influence.  Russell handed me my diploma when I graduated.  Then when I was talking to Tallowood about coming to serve here, he called me and encouraged me greatly.  We mourn his passing but we give thanks for his faithfulness.  Who will take up his mantle?  Who will receive a double portion of his spirit?  Who will serve the God Russell served and proclaimed?

Quotes:
Elijah made his offer:  what can I do for you?
Elisha: I want a double portion of your Spirit.
D. L. Moody says he heard British Evangelist Henry Varley say, “The world has yet to see what God will do with and for and through the man who is fully and wholly consecrated to Him.”  Moody got on his knees in prayer and said, “I will be that person.”
Duane Brooks: Our God is still God. We are here. Let’s follow Christ all the way home. Someday, God knows when, we will follow Russell home. But until we do, I pray for a double portion of his Spirit.  I pray it for all of us.  And I know . . . I ask a hard thing.
