David got into more trouble in one night than he could get out of in a lifetime. After experiencing great spiritual victories, he succumbed to temptation. Trying to cover up his sin, he caused people to die, and told Joab not to worry about it. But God knew what David had done and was not pleased. King David was not the ruler who could save Israel, because he could not save himself. But a thousand years later, a ruler would be born in his line who faced temptation, never sinned, and saved the world. His kindness leads us to repentance. Message based on 2 Samuel 11:1-3, 14-16, 25-27.
Quotes:
Duane Brooks: When we choose to flee from sin we are literally running for our spiritual lives.
Nancy Brooks, Kenneth Taylor, and Geoffrey Chaucer: Idle hands are the devils workshop.
Charles Spurgeon: Some temptations come to the industrious, but all temptations attack the idle.
Cornfield on Hee Haw: Doc I broke my arm in three places. What should I do? Stay out of those places.
Sir Walter Scott:
Oh what a tangled Web we weave
When first we practice to deceive.
Duane Brooks: Uriah had more integrity than David.
Duane Brooks: David multiplied his sin by sending Uriah to his death.
Duane Brooks: The best time to repent is right now.
Duane Brooks: We can deceive others, and even deceive ourselves, but we can never deceive God. Fool all the people some of the time, some of the people all the time, but we can fool God, none of the time.
R.C. Sproul: There are many things in my life that I do not want to put under the gaze of Christ. Yet I know there is nothing hidden from Him. He knows me better than my wife knows me. And yet He loves me. This is the most amazing thing of all about God’s grace. It would be one thing for Him to love us if we could fool Him into thinking that we were better than we actually are. But He knows better. He knows all there is to know about us, including those things that could destroy our reputation. He is minutely and acutely aware of every skeleton in every closet. And He loves us.
When you are tempted:
(1) look back and recall God’s goodness to you.
(2) look ahead and remember “the wages of sin”.
(3) look around and think of all the people who may be affected by what you do.
(4) look up and ask God for the strength to say no
Romans 2:4: His kindness leads us to repentance.
