Listen

Description

Again and again we see David inquire of the Lord when he needed direction and protection. This pattern teaches us the way God’s people find God’s will for our lives and our church. We inquire of the Lord. Then we listen. God wants us to know what to do even more than we want to know. Message based on 1 Samuel 23:1-12.

Quotes:
Duane Brooks: When David was lost in a wilderness, he was never afraid to ask God for directions. When David inquired of the Lord about what to do, he succeeded and remained safe despite Saul’s efforts to kill him. God did not fail him.  And he will not fail us. When we face difficult, risky decisions, we can move with confidence if we ask God for direction.

Duane Brooks: Like David, we pray selflessly, not just for information, but for formation, for transformation.

Eugene Peterson: We are too often guided by the unholy trinity of my wants, my needs, and my desires.  Self is a broken Savior. A better question than “what do I want” is : what does God want to do for others?

Robert Smith wrote in "Doctrine That Dances": When I meditated on the word 'Guidance,' I kept seeing 'dance' at the end of the word. The dance takes surrender, willingness, and attentiveness from one person, and gentle guidance and skill from the other. My eyes drew back to the word Guidance. When I saw 'G: I thought of God, followed by 'u' and 'i.' 'God, 'u' and 'i' dance." God, you and I dance. Once again, I became willing to let God lead.

Duane Brooks: When you’re ready to run down the next path of your life’s journey, or the next time you’re not sure which path to take, stop. Throw yourselves into the arms of God--and dance! Let Him lead. He’ll guide. And by the way, after your dance He’ll even bring you home!

Fernando Ortega:
Jesus, King of angels, Heaven's light
Shine Your face upon this house tonight
Let no evil come into my dreams
Light of Heaven keep me in Your peace

Remind me how You made dark spirits flee
And spoke Your power to the raging sea
And spoke Your mercy to a sinful man
Remind me Jesus, this is what I am

The universe is vast beyond the stars
But You are mindful when the sparrow falls
And mindful of the anxious thoughts
That find me, surround me and bind me

Jesus, King of angels, Heaven's light
Hold my hand and keep me through this night
