Description

As part of her series on relapse prevention, in today’s episode of “Help Me, Rhonda!,” clinical psychologist Dr. Rhonda Karg continues to discuss relapse prevention and underscores the importance of getting the support you need to help you obtain and maintain your sobriety from drugs, alcohol, or other addictive or compulsive behaviors you are trying to change. To help you resist the urge to numb out, Dr. Karg recommends using skills which are essential for maintaining your sobriety, including:

-understanding the relationship between your emotional state and your drinking or drug patterns. These emotional states may serve as triggers if you were self-medicating your anger, sadness, fear, or shame.
-discovering the source of your unbearable pain and treating those wounds so you don't feel the need to numb out
-getting social support from people who support your recovery and/or are also working on their sobriety
-finding professional help if you have untreated trauma, depression, anxiety, or other mental health symptoms
-maintaining emotional sobriety
-learning new effective coping skills

Dr. Karg encourages you to watch the other videos in this series for other methods to help you establish and maintain sobriety.
