This week I get to sit down with licensed clinician and EMDR practitioner Shelia Russell. I met Shelia at a wellness conference in Iowa, we were both fortunate to be speaking about areas near and dear to our hearts, first responder wellness. Shelia dives right in on explaining why EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) is so effective at alleviating distress associated with traumatic memories and how we as first responders can benefit from this practice. There is a whole world out there ready to help you put the past behind you, available to give you the tools to live a life worth living. Shelia is a Certified EMDR Therapist and EMDRIA Approved Consultant-in-Training with expertise in EMDR and trauma treatment of simple and complex PTSD focusing specifically on First Responders, Military Personnel, Domestic Violence, and Gambling and Substance Use Disorders, completing specialty training in these presenting issues.
Currently Shelia is active with the West Des Moines Police Department Peer Support Team, the Des Moines Police Department Peer Support Resources Committee and an ambassador with the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization Yoga for First Responders
Shelia has also presented in several speaking engagements at the Iowa First Responders Peer Support Conference, Polk City Police Department, Des Moines Moms, The Public Health Conference of Iowa, and the Des Moines Metro Law Enforcement and Spouse Support Group.
