Here we are, 2023!  While in some ways I don’t consider the passing of a new year to be much more significant as a new month or new week, as the minute hand reaches the top of the clock for the next hour, we’ve made another lap around the sun to turn another year.

Yet, I have to consider that God Himself set the first day of the Jewish calendar right before their exodus from Egypt and marked it as an annual day of celebration and remembrance.  Today, January 1, wasn’t set on a calendar by God in the same way.  It can however be our day of remembrance, reflection and celebration of what is to come.

For our Scripture text, I want to turn to Psalm 23.   David does a lot of complaining in the Psalms.  He talks to God about his problems for many verses, then at some point takes a few verses to praise God for being the answer.

Psalm 23 is not that way.  This chapter, written as a stand-alone song, praises the Lord as David’s shepherd—more than likely while David himself was a shepherd.
