Our Cross to Bear

 Joshua Boyd

On this special Resurrection Sunday we honor and celebrate the events that took place over two thousand years ago that changed the course of history.  Yes, Jesus was God.  And Jesus was a man who had feelings and emotions and thoughts just like you and I.

At Christmas, the topic of humility comes up easily with the images of a baby in a barn sleeping in hay.  Even today, someone born in those less-than-ideal surroundings would be considered poor or not of high social economic stature.

The image of the cross doesn’t immediately equate to humility.  But it should.  Under Roman law, crucifixion was not the usual form of death.  It was only allowed for certain cases such as robbery or rebellion by slaves.  Roman citizens could be crucified only for high treason.  It was a very public and shameful death meant to be a visual example to others not to commit the same crime.  In many places, the crucifixion was done along a public road so that all travelers would see it.

The humility of Christ is shown in his birth and all the way through to his death.  God is humility perfected.  Everything He has done and continues to do is from an attitude of humility.
