Today’s story seed is Shut the Window.
Luke 11:29
While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah.”
Listen to today's story seed. A person learned something important about why they were always cold in the house. It came as an insight as the person wondered what was the problem. It was like a voice of remembering something long forgotten.
The voice said, “It’s winter, and your attic window is open. You must close it or the cold wind will continue to make you sick. Plus, not only is your window open, but look around; all the people in this town leave their attic window open. It makes sense in the summer, but not now. You must close your window and tell all your neighbors to do the same.”
The person said, “I can’t do that; my neighbors would think I was meddling in their business, peeping through their windows.”
But the voice persisted, and eventually that person closed the attic window and spread the word that others should do the same, and everyone found comfort and warmth from those words.
Yet many years later the attic windows were all open again during the winter. This time, the home builder himself relayed to them that the windows were not meant to remain open during the cold months of winter. Yet the people would not listen.
“You want to talk about my house, my windows. Really? I don’t think so. I’m not cold. We keep our heat on constantly. We don’t feel any draft.”
And so it is today. Some people listen. Some people don’t. We want to be open to God’s message. Perhaps that is why we open the window, but there are times to shut the window, to savor the graces that have been given to us, to be warmed by the Holy Spirit.
We can’t stay stuck in one position throughout our whole life, we must follow the seasons of God’s love in our house.
We can learn from the past so that we may be closer to God in the future, and more importantly, closer to God in this very moment. There may be something as simple as closing a window that you need to address.
Maybe you need to stop visiting a certain website, or perhaps put your credit card in a drawer, or lock your liquor cabinet. Some of us need to join a support group, make a phone call we’ve been postponing, or follow through on a promise we’ve made.
God will help you. Go ahead and shut the window.
