John, Chapter 12 - Mary Anoints Jesus

12 Therefore, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they made Him a dinner there, and Martha was serving; and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him.

-          Therefore (because of what we read in Chapter 11; it was the Passover and the Jews were wondering if Jesus would even come at all after He told the Pharisees and the Chief religious leaders that He is the Christ, the Door and the Way)

-          Six days before the Passover (6 is the number for man; manifestation of sin; right before Passover; looking for the lamb’s blood to put on the door post so the death angel will pass over; what a picture of Jesus entering the scene)

-          Jesus came to Bethany (which means house of depression or misery or poverty; because this is the condition of man without a savior)

-          Where Lazarus (which means “God has helped”) was, whom Jesus (which means “Savior” had raised from the dead);

-          Put it all together now:

o   Sinful man looking for the blood of the lamb to put on the doorpost to be saved from the death angel

o   Jesus (Savior) comes to Bethany (house of misery / poverty) because he is dying in his sins without a savior

o   Where Lazarus (God has helped) was (past tense) whom Jesus (Savior) raised him from the dead

3 Mary then took a pound of very expensive perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

-          This was an act of great humility and recognition of Jesus as the Christ about the die exactly has been predicted in the old testament

4 But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, the one who intended to betray Him, *said, 5 “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the proceeds given to poor people?” 6 Now he said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he kept the money box, he used to steal from what was put into it.

-          Judas Iscariot mocks Mary for her act of kindness, love and respect

-          Evil men always mock those who do good

-          They are normally just jealous or in this case, a thief who wanted to steal (this reveals who’s child he is; remember chapter 10, the thief comes to steal, kill & destroy).

7 Therefore Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of My burial. 8 For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.”

-          Therefore (because Jesus knew Judas Isacriot’s thoughts and heart)

-          Jesus said, “Leave her alone” (God rebukes evil)

-          So that she may keep it for the day of My burial (notice Jesus is telling everything that He is die and be buried and that this perfume is appropriate for that which is about to happen)

-          For you always have the poor with you (it never ends)

-          But you do not always have Me (you have Jesus in the flesh for a very short time; then He will die; but He will raise again on the 3rd day; proving He is God)

o   He will leave physically and go back to Heaven until the second coming
