John, Chapter 6 - Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
6 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival was near.
- Some time after this (after what? After Jesus told the Jewish leaders that He would not judge them but the law given through Moses will judge everyone who does not believe in Jesus Christ. He also said He was not looking for the approval of men)
- Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (the circle or circuit) (that is, the Sea of Tiberias which is in the center of Israel which means “naval”)
- And a great crowd of people followed him because they saw signs he had performed by healing the sick (notice they saw miracles He performed; that’s why they followed)
- Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples (Jesus likes to go up on a mountainside to commune with the Father and fellowship with his disciples)
- The Jewish Passover Festival was near (this gives us a time-frame)
5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
- When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him (here they come)
- He said to Philip (lover of horses) “where shall be buy bread for these people to eat?”
o He asked this only to test him (notice He was testing him)
o For he already had in mind what he was going to do (notice He already knows what He is going to do)
7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
- Philip answered him (Remember he is a lover of horses, a real cowboy)
o It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite! (in other words, there is no way it can be done according to man)
8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”
- Another of his disciples Andrew (Man), Simon (to hear) Peter’s (stone or rock) spoke up,
o Man listen to the rock speaking up
- Here is a boy with five small barley loaves (five is the number of grace) and two small fishes (two is the number for witnesses or truth), but how far will they go among so many? (how far will God’s grace go among so many?)
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
- Jesus said, Have the people sit down (this was Jesus setting an expectation of the people that they would soon eat)
