John, Chapter 8 - The Adulterous Woman
8 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 And early in the morning He came again into the temple area, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began teaching them. 3 Now the scribes and the Pharisees *brought a woman caught in the act of adultery, and after placing her in the center of the courtyard, 4 they *said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5 Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?”
- But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives
o Nicodemus (meaning “victory of the people” was a Jewish leader and defended Jesus by saying the Jewish law requires a man to be questioned and listened to in order to find out what they were doing before judging them. His peers made a snide remark to him and then they all went home.
o But (not Jesus, He went the Mount of Olives) Olive oil is used for anointing and the Mount of Olives is a very special place. It is were Jesus ascended into heaven (Acts 1:11-12) and it the same place He will return (Zechariah 14: 4).
o And early in the morning He came again in the temple area, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began teaching them (it’s great idea to sit down and let Jesus teach you the things you need to know)
- Now the scribes and the Pharisees (we learned previously they were false religious leaders and the love of God was not in them)
- Brought a woman caught in the act of adultery (how did this happen? Why wasn’t the man involved brought in her with her?. How did they know she was married? It seeks like she was set up)
- And after placing her in the center of the courtyard (they seem to want to make a big spectacle of her)
- They said to Him (Jesus), “Teacher this woman has been caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law, Moses command us to stone such women; what then do You say? (the manner in which this was done seems to try and draw a contrast between Moses and Jesus; think Law vs. Grace).
6 Now they were saying this to test Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground.
- Now they were saying this to test Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him (notice their motives; just trying to test Jesus or trick Jesus into disagreeing with the Law so they could accuse Him; not because they really wanted to know what Jesus thought)
- But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground (what did He write?, some people believe He wrote their names and the sins they committed but we don’t know for sure what He wrote)
- Notice He didn’t answer their question, He merely wrote on the ground with His finger
7 When they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.
- When they persisted in asking Him (notice they wouldn’t give us this trick)
- He straightened up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him be first to throw a stone at her”.
