Psalm, Chapter 108
God Praised and Supplicated to Give Victory.
A Song, a Psalm of David.
108 My heart is steadfast, O God;
I will sing, I will sing praises, even with my [a]soul.
- The title is “God Praised and Supplicated to Give Victory”
o It’s a two part formula
o First, God is Praised – For His love, For His mercy, For His grace, Who He is
o And Supplicated
§ to ask for humbly or earnestly, as by praying. 2. To make a humble entreaty to; beseech. To make a humble, earnest petition; beg.
o Here is the formula
§ God Praised (plural) over & over
§ And Supplicated (to humbly & earnestly ask)
§ = Victory
- It’s a song of David
o It’s a song because God wants us to remember the words
o It’s a Psalm of David: “David” means beloved
o It’s a song every beloved child of God should sing
- Now we get to verse 1
- My heart is steadfast, O God’
o fixed in direction; steadily directed: a steadfast gaze.
o firm in purpose, resolution, faith, etc.: a steadfast friend.
o unwavering, as resolution, faith, or adherence.
o firmly established, as an institution or a state of affairs.
o firmly fixed in place or position; stable.
- When your heart is steadfast you are going God’s direction walking by faith; therefore,
- I will sing, I will sing praises, even with my soul
o This means you will sing from your heart for eternity (your soul)
2 Awake, harp and lyre;
I will awaken the dawn!
- To awake harp and lyre means you start playing these instruments & singing
- I will awaken the dawn means you are going to do this first thing in the morning
o In other words, the first you thing you think about is praising God early in the morning
o If you start every day with this attitude and gratitude of the heart everyday will be outblessed by the Lord
3 I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples,
And I will sing praises to You among the nations.
- When you sing, this is what you should be singing about
o Give thanks to You, O Lord
- Among the peoples
o This means in public view & hearing so others can see
- And I will sing praises to You among the nations
o This means not just once or twice in public view
o It means over and over until the all the nations hear it
o It’s a concert tour, an internet broadcast, everyone is invited
The idea is the praise & thanksgiving is a life’s work in plain view of all
