Psalm, Chapter 20
Prayer for Victory over Enemies.
For the music director. A Psalm of David.
20 May the Lord answer you on a day of trouble!
May the name of the God of Jacob [a]protect you!
- Prayer for Victory over Enemies
o This title seems odd since we just considered the heavens
o We were amazed by immense size, wisdom and power of God
o If God be for you; who could be against you
o It seems often in the moments of our highest faith; difficulty also comes immediately after
- May the Lord answer you on a day of trouble
o The word translated Lord here is Jehovah (the One True God)
o The focus is on the Lord Answering (which implies a prayer first)
o And not just any answer; but on a day trouble
§ In the very day of your trouble when you pray
§ This prayer has a sense or urgent need and reliance upon God for an immediate answer (not a slow one)
§ God is able to answer on the same day; are you able to believe it?
- May the name of the God of Jacob protect you
o The focus on this verse is His name
o His name is this section is “ĕlôhîym” and it means God(s)!
o This is interesting because God “ĕlôhîym” is the plural form of God
§ It seems to be a reference to the Trinity (multiple yet one)
o The name Jacob means “heel catcher; supplanter; one who follows after; may God protect”
o If you stitch this together it means that “God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit will follow after you and catch you from falling”
o What is implied is that all three are at work to make this happen in your life & mine
2 May He send you help from the sanctuary,
And support you from Zion!
- May He send you help from the sanctuary
o The sanctuary is a reference to God’s home (the place He lives)
o What is implied is that He would send help from His house to yours
- And support you from Zion
o Zion is a reference to a mountain in Israel and it is a picture of heaven
o When the New Jerusalem comes down from heaven (1,500 mile cube; made of precious stones) it floats over this area and it is the where God will rule and reign from with those that come down from heaven with Him after the rapture (us) and He will rule and reign from this cubed precious stone city for 1,000 years
o So this prayer represents support from Jerusalem; from the mountain of God in the here and now but also in eternity after (from heaven)
