Psalm, Chapter 23
The Lord, the Psalmist’s Shepherd.
A Psalm of David.
23 The Lord is my shepherd,
I [a]shall not want.
- Psalm 23 is a famous bible chapter
o It is made up of the number 2 which represent witnesses
o And the number 3 which represents the trinity (God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit three-in-one
o Added together they equal 5 which is the number for grace
o Multiple together they equal 6 the number of man
o So right off the start we have “witness God The Father, God The Son, God the Holy Spirit three-one offering Grace to mankind
- The title is The Lord, the Psalmist’s Shepherd
o A Shepherd cares for his sheep
o He leads them to still waters
o He leads them to the green pastures
o He protects them with his Rod and his life
o He knows them by name
o And his sheep know his voice as well
o There is safety and security for the sheep because of the good shepherd
- Now we come to the first verse
o The Lord is my shepherd
§ David is making a declaration
· The Lord (this is the One True God)
· Is my shepherd (not a shepherd my shepherd)
§ In other words, David is relying upon the Lord to lead him and protect him
o I shall not want
§ In other words, I will not be in need because my Shepherd takes such great care of me I don’t need anything else (He is all I need)
o Do you consider the Lord, your Shepherd?
§ Do you trust Him to provide everything you need?
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside [b]quiet waters.
- He makes me lie down in green pastures
o He makes me (this means the Shepherd is the cause)
o To lied down in green pastures is what He caused
o To lie down means to rest in absolute peace without fear
o In green pastures means it’s soft, it’s beautiful and yummy food is included
o This speaks volumes about God’s loving care
- He leads me besides quiet waters
o He leads (this means He is directing the steps)
o Besides quiet waters
§ Quiet waters are where it is safe to drink
§ It’s very peaceful with no threats around
§ The water is clear, cold, healthy and refreshing to drink
o So this activity goes beyond rest and food and expands into refreshing water that is safe to drink and be fully satisfied
