Psalm, Chapter 82

Unjust Judgments Rebuked.

A Psalm of Asaph.

82 God takes His position in [a]His assembly;
He judges in the midst of the gods.

-          The title of the message is Unjust Judgements Rebuked

-          Note that God knows there are “unjust judgements”

-          Note that God will rebuke them

o   Rebuke means to reprimand; sharply criticize

o   In other words, God will settle the score

-          A Psalm of Asaph which means “collector or gatherer”

o   The title speaks of judgement and rebuke at the time when all people are gathered together to stand before the righteous Judge

-          Now we read verse 1:

o   God takes His position in His assembly

§  This is a picture of the court room packed and the judge comes out from His chamber and sits on the Judgement seat ready to hear each case

o   He judges in the mist of the gods

§  gods is little g; referring to men who think more highly of themselves than they should

§  God capital G shows up and in their midst (in the middle) and quickly separates the sheep from the goats (truth from lies)


 2 How long will you judge unjustly
 And show partiality to the wicked? Selah

-          This is a question for wicked judges

o   How long will you judge unjustly

o   In other words; God knows about it; God is keeping track & time

-          And show partiality to the wicked? Selah

o   Wicked judges show partiality to the wicked (they are in on the scam)

o   But God knows about it so Selah

§  think about it; because there will be a great cost for this behavior


 3 Vindicate the weak and fatherless;
 Do justice to the afflicted and destitute.

-          Vindicate the weak and fatherless

o   Vindicate means “to clear, as from accusation, imputation, suspicion, or the like; to vindicate someone’s honor”

-          The weak and the fatherless

o   The weak are not strong enough to vindicate themselves

§  So they needs God’s power and protection to do it

o   The fatherless have no father to protect them

§  So they need God to act their father and defend and protect them

-          Do justice to the afflicted and destitute

o   Do justice (that which is just)

o   To the afflicted (mentally or physically impaired)

o   And destitute (suffering extreme poverty; needy people)

-          Asaph wants God to step up and help those who cannot help themselves

o   And God will do it!

o   He will vindicate them (clear their name and honor; forgiveness)

o   He will do justice to them (give them what they justly deserve)

§  A fair trial and proper rewards (according to their faith)
