Psalm, Chapter 82
Unjust Judgments Rebuked.
A Psalm of Asaph.
82 God takes His position in [a]His assembly;
He judges in the midst of the gods.
- The title of the message is Unjust Judgements Rebuked
- Note that God knows there are “unjust judgements”
- Note that God will rebuke them
o Rebuke means to reprimand; sharply criticize
o In other words, God will settle the score
- A Psalm of Asaph which means “collector or gatherer”
o The title speaks of judgement and rebuke at the time when all people are gathered together to stand before the righteous Judge
- Now we read verse 1:
o God takes His position in His assembly
§ This is a picture of the court room packed and the judge comes out from His chamber and sits on the Judgement seat ready to hear each case
o He judges in the mist of the gods
§ gods is little g; referring to men who think more highly of themselves than they should
§ God capital G shows up and in their midst (in the middle) and quickly separates the sheep from the goats (truth from lies)
2 How long will you judge unjustly
And show partiality to the wicked? Selah
- This is a question for wicked judges
o How long will you judge unjustly
o In other words; God knows about it; God is keeping track & time
- And show partiality to the wicked? Selah
o Wicked judges show partiality to the wicked (they are in on the scam)
o But God knows about it so Selah
§ think about it; because there will be a great cost for this behavior
3 Vindicate the weak and fatherless;
Do justice to the afflicted and destitute.
- Vindicate the weak and fatherless
o Vindicate means “to clear, as from accusation, imputation, suspicion, or the like; to vindicate someone’s honor”
- The weak and the fatherless
o The weak are not strong enough to vindicate themselves
§ So they needs God’s power and protection to do it
o The fatherless have no father to protect them
§ So they need God to act their father and defend and protect them
- Do justice to the afflicted and destitute
o Do justice (that which is just)
o To the afflicted (mentally or physically impaired)
o And destitute (suffering extreme poverty; needy people)
- Asaph wants God to step up and help those who cannot help themselves
o And God will do it!
o He will vindicate them (clear their name and honor; forgiveness)
o He will do justice to them (give them what they justly deserve)
§ A fair trial and proper rewards (according to their faith)
