Psalm, Chapter 84
Longing for the Temple Worship.
For the choir director; [a]on the Gittith. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.
84 How lovely are Your dwelling places,
O Lord of hosts!
- The title of this message is longing for the temple worship
- most of us are longing for something
- Christians are longing to have or more intimate relationship with Jesus Christ where we can see Him and touch Him or maybe even be hugged by Him
- In this chapter we begin with longing for the temple worship
o temple worship was filled with song and music and praise
o it was loud; it was heartfelt; it was spirit led
o this is the kind of worship we should all participate in
- this Psalm was for the choir director which means it was meant to be a song
o this means it is important enough to be remembered and sang
- it was on the Gittith
o Gitteth was a musical instrument or a melody that was used during wine making
o Wine making is a symbol of God’s work on earth through Christ our Lord
o In other words it would be a song of gratefulness to our God who saved us
- A Psalm of the sons of Korah
o Korah’s family was swallowed up by the earth because they tried to take over the power and position given to Moses and Aaron. They challenged their authority and God opened the earth swallowed them up except some a few young sons who weren’t there. These sons had sons and passed on the stories of what happened to their forefathers. 7 generations later the sons of Korah were in charge of Worship in the temple and they sang louder and with more grateful hearts than anyone else because they knew the evil family they had been born into yet God spared them.
- Now we read in verse 1:
o How lovely are Your dwelling places, O Lord of hosts!
§ God dwells in heaven
§ God dwells in temples & churches
§ God dwells in the hearts and souls of men and women
§ Wherever God dwells there is beauty, peace, life, love, grace & peace
o O Lord of hosts
§ He is Lord of hosts (the heavenly host)
§ All those who went before us (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, etc)
§ All the armies of heaven (angles) are called the heavenly hosts
§ This clearly declares His power & glory and authority over all
2 My soul longed and even yearned for the courts of the Lord;
My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God.
o Does your heat long for or even years to be with God’s people?
- My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God
o Does the joy in your heart rise to the level that you want to sign from your heart and flesh to the living God?
o If you understand Who He is; What He has done; What He has planned; What He has promised; What He will do; and that He is living and alive and coming back to do it all – YOUR JOY WOULD RISE TO THIS LEVEL TOO!!
