Psalm, Chapter 87
The Privileges of Citizenship in Zion.
A Psalm of the sons of Korah. A Song.
87 His foundation is in the holy mountains.
2 The Lord loves the gates of Zion
More than all the other dwelling places of Jacob.
- The privileges of Citizenship in Zion
o Did you know citizens of Zion have privileges?
o Zion is the hill Jerusalem is built upon
o Zion is a picture of heaven as well
o It represents God’s home
- A psalm of the sons of Korah. A song
o The sons of Korah led the worship in the temple with super-grateful hearts because they came from an evil family who tried to take power away from Moses and Aaron. God swallowed them up on the earth. The young sons of Korah were not there so they were spared. 7-generations later we find them leading worship in the temple with “a little extra gratitude” because they know the evil family they were born into and yet they became citizens of Zion! They’re going to heaven.
- His foundation is the holy mountains
o If your foundation is holy; it’s solid (no better place to build upon)
o Mountains are big and strong (a picture of God’s power)
o The mountains are holy because God chose this place to send His Son to die and pay for the sins of the world (God could have chose anywhere but He chose Jerusalem)
- The Lord loves the gates of Zion
o The gates are where the leaders gather to discuss events
o The gates are meant to keep enemies out and citizens safely inside
o You might say it’s the doorway or gateway (Jesus said I am the way)
- More than all the other dwelling places of Jacob
o Jacob had traveled many miles and went many places
o Of all these places, God loved one in particular – Jerusalem
§ Jerusalem means “ In Awe Of Peace”
§ Jacob means “he turns the head of God who listens”
§ God changed Jacob’s name to Israel
§ Israel means “He retains God”
§ We are in awe of God’s peace He gives all who ask God for help to turn His head and listen; God will change his name (adoption) into God’s family forever (retains)
3 Glorious things are spoken of you,
O city of God. [a]Selah.
- Glorious things are spoken of you, O City of God. Selah
- Selah means think about this over and over
- Think about how Israel is surrounded by enemies yet still remains
- Think about how the Jews were scattered throughout the earth but somehow retained their heritage and language and were gathered together again after 2,000 years and became a nation again in 1948.
- Surely it is the city of God !
