For the music director; on the Gittith. A Psalm of David.
8 Lord, our Lord,
How majestic is Your name in all the earth,
You who have [a]displayed Your splendor above the heavens!
- This chapter is about
o The Lord’s Glory
o And Mankind’s Dignity
- For the music director; on the Gittith
o GITTITH gĭt’ ĭth (Heb. גִּתִּ֗ית), a feminine noun used exclusively in the titles of three Pss, 8, 81 and 84. Three meanings are possible. It describes a musical instrument made or used in the Philistine city of Gath (Josh 11:22); the Targ. suggests that it was a type of melody from Gath; or it may also refer to the Heb. word, גִּתִּי, H1785, a “wine press” (Neh 13:15), and thus mean a song sung at the grape harvest.
o gittith, git'-tith (Heb.)--a stringed musical instrument; from or of Gath.
o Gittith is thought to have been a musical instrument made at Gath, or else the title of certain Psalms that were sung during the time of gathering grapes and making wine (Psalms 8; 81; 84, titles).
- LORD, our Lord
o LORD is from Jehova, the existing One, the proper name of the one true God
o Lord is from adon, lord, master, husband, king
o It is saying Jehova God is our master, our king, our savior, our leader
- How majestic is Your name in all the earth
o אַדִּיר ʼaddîyr, ad-deer'; from H142; wide or (generally) large; figuratively, powerful:—excellent, famous, gallant, glorious, goodly, lordly, mighty(-ier one), noble, principal, worthy.
