1 The Lord is a God who avenges.
O God who avenges, shine forth.
2 Rise up, Judge of the earth;
pay back to the proud what they deserve.
- The title of this message is radical
o The Lord Implored to Avenge His People
o Notice that the Lord Implored (this means His people are imploring Him to listen and take action)
- And what are they asking Him to do
o To Avenge His People
o This means to pay them back for the evil they have done (payback)
- The Lord is a God who avenges
o This is an interesting fact – The Lord is a God who avenges (He does this)
- O God who avenges, shine forth
o This means let the avenging appear (shine forth)
- Rise up, Judge the earth
o The request is that the Lord rise up (this means get up from His throne)
o Judge the earth (this means payback each man according to his/her works)
- Pay back to the proud what they deserve
o This means punish the proud (those who don’t fear God and who mistreat others)
o Notice they deserve it!
3 How long, Lord, will the wicked,
how long will the wicked be jubilant?
- Sometimes we wonder how long the Lord will let the wicked get away their ill behavior
- How long will the wicked be jubilant (allowed to celebrate their wicked ways)
- The prayer is really a request that their time come to an end and that judgement and punishment would start now
4 They pour out arrogant words;
all the evildoers are full of boasting.
- Notice they pour out arrogant words
o Like they are in charge or are the authority
- All evildoers are full of boasting
o Boasting means look how rich or powerful I am
o Boasting means they act like they earned it or deserved it like their better than others
o It’s a lie; its not true
5 They crush your people, Lord;
they oppress your inheritance.
6 They slay the widow and the foreigner;
they murder the fatherless.
- They crush your people, Lord; they oppress your inheritance
o They are mistreating your people
o This is going to make the Lord very angry and kindle the fire of His wrath
- They slay the widow and the foreigner; they murder the fatherless
o The seem to pick on the weak; those with no one else to defend them
7 They say, “The Lord does not see;
the God of Jacob takes no notice.”
- They say the Lord does not see or take notice
- But just because they say it does not make it true
- God does see everything and He notices everything!
