Psalm, Chapter 97

The Lord’s Power and Dominion.

97 The Lord [a]reigns, let the earth rejoice;
Let the many [b]islands be glad.

-        The title of this message is The Lords Power and Dominion

-        This is about The Lords Power

o   The Power to create

o   The Power to give life

o   The Power to grow

o   The Power to bless

o   The Power to correct

o   The Power to Judge

o   The Power to punish

o   The Power to destroy

o   God’s Power is complete

-        And Dominion

o   This means He is in complete control of all (it is His)

-        The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice

o   If you know the Lord is a loving God and He reigns it causes you to rejoice

o   Thank God evil does not reign

o   The entire earth should be rejoicing (acting with thanksgiving & praise)

-        Let the many islands be glad

o   Islands seem like their alone

o   Islands get beat against wave after wave

o   Christians are not meant to be alone (no such thing as a Island Christian)

o   The islands are glad because they know God’s power sustains them

§  Waves won’t wear them out

§  The power of the ocean is not stronger than God

§  So too, we should be glad that God won’t let the waves of life wear us out


 2 Clouds and thick darkness surround Him;
 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.

-        Clouds and thick darkness surround Him

o   If it didn’t we could not handle His glory

o   It seems like perfect conditions to birth lightening

-        Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne

o   Righteousness is doing what is right all the time

o   Justice rewards good behavior and punishes evil behavior; therefore, its just

o   These are the foundations of His throne (that which is His house is built upon)

3 Fire goes before Him
 And burns up His adversaries round about.

-        Fire goes before Him

o   Fire consumes everything it touches unless its pure (without fodder)

o   This speaks of instant testing, judgement and destruction of the impure

-        And burns up His adversaries round about

o   Consumes His adversaries (those against Jesus Christ)

4 His lightnings lit up the world;
 The earth saw and trembled.

-        His lightnings 

o   Light which emanates from Him

o   Lit up the world (not just a local area; the world!)

-        The earth saw and trembled
