Why a Kitchen Activist Podcast?
In the first episode of Why a Kitchen Activist, host Florencia Ramirez, author of EAT LESS WATER, shares how she transitioned her focus from water conservation in the shower to water-saving practices in the kitchen. After selling 80,000 shower timers, Ramirez realized that while conserving visible water—such as that used in sprinklers, showers, and water hoses—is essential, it's only a tiny part of the bigger picture. Most of the water we consume is "virtual water," used to grow and produce our food. Seven out of every 10 gallons of water are used in food production, and each person consumes between 500 and 1,300 gallons of virtual water daily. Ramirez understood that she needed to shift her focus from the shower to the kitchen to make the most significant impact on water conservation.
Ramirez asked herself: Can an individual eater make a difference in global water systems? To answer this question, she traveled 16,000 miles, interviewing farmers and food producers nationwide. The insights she gained are shared in her book, EAT LESS WATER: THE SOLUTION TO WATER SHORTAGES IS IN THE KITCHEN. Through speaking engagements, food workshops, events, and media appearances, Ramirez has consistently been asked the same questions: What should I buy? Where should I shop? What can I do in my kitchen to eat less water?
This podcast is dedicated to answering those questions.
