I once heard a story about a zen monk who lived alone in a little hut by the river. One night, a thief crept through the shadows and was about to break into the hut when the monk waved hello and invited him inside. The thief was embarrassed but he entered the monk’s abode and the monk proceeded to offer him everything he had. When the thief had filled his reverse Santa sack with all of the monk’s meager belongings including the clothes off of his back, he slunk away guiltily into the darkness. Naked, the monk walked outside and looked up at the moon.
“Poor man,” he whispered, “I wish I could give him the moon.”
