For me, without doubt, the study of spiritual based literature has been one of the most powerful methods of transformation in my life. It has connected me with the energies of many great beings (which is a real thing and actually transforms you. For example when you read Yogananda's book with openness, love and understanding, his energy becomes apart of you). Reading and study of these texts can be much, much more than acquiring mere intellectual knowledge. They can lead to an awakening of the spirit as well as a much greater depth of wisdom and understanding into spiritual practices, philosophy and pathways. Having the philosophical understanding is indispensable regardless of what tradition you are apart of.
You can find these texts in many places, but here's easy amazon links to them. You can also find many different commentaries on and translations of the Bhagavad Gita (I've read the version by Swami Satchidananda and the version by Swami Prabhupada) , and the Ashtavakra Gita. You can also find other translations of Rumi's poetry, but I have only used Coleman Bark's works.
