  1. A general principle, not a universal promise.
  2. It is descriptive, not prescriptive.
  3. It’s what SHOULD happen, not what WILL happen.
  4. By its very definition, it is a literary genre, device, and style in the form of short, pithy sayings, prophetic utterances, or compositions of comparisons.
  5. The word describes short sayings or sentences of wisdom.

4. Applications

  1. Consider the cautionary tale of Solomon’s life and know that the God-given wisdom of Proverbs was life impacting and life saving in Solomon’s time, but it’s just as applicable now as it was then and just as important for us to know and listen to.
  2. God knew Solomon intimately. He knew everything about him and every inclination of his character and He still called him “beloved”. He still used him to rule his people and to leave us these words. God can use you in the same way.  There is no waiting until you are perfect, that will never happen this side of death or the 2nd coming. But God’s word is FULL of Him using broken, sinful people like Solomon, like David, like you, like me, to accomplish His will and to reach people with His good news.
  3. Do you fear the LORD? Do you respect Him for who He is and for what He has done? Do you have that foundation in your life? If not, NOW is the time to make that right.
  4. If you don’t know Jesus as your Lord and Savior, please don’t let another day go by without changing that. There are no “magic” words you need to say. You don’t need to make yourself perfect before you come to Him-that will never happen anyway. Just admit that you are a sinner. That you need a Savior because you can’t save yourself. And surrender to Him as your Lord.
