One Truth and Many Lies
2 Peter 2
Days of Distorted Doctrine – 2 Peter 2:1-3
(Jer 23:16-17; 1 John 2:2; Micah 3:11; 1 Tim 6:10; John 8:44; 1 Pet 5:8; Matt 7:13-15)
- False teachers are often focused on sales, not salvation.
- False teachers often use the same words, but different dictionaries.
- Yes, Satan loses in the end. But today, he is alive and active!
- Matthew 7:13-14 says “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”
Commits to chains the condemned and rescues the righteous – 2 Peter 2:4-10
(Gen 6:9; Gen 7:21; Gen 18:24, 26)
- Condemnation comes when one rejects God regardless of their title.
- God will ultimately rescue the righteous regardless of their circumstances.
- “Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you.” ~ CS Lewis from The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe
Deceptive and Destroyed – 2 Peter 2:10-16
(2 Cor 11:3-4)
- Do we ever try to manipulate the scriptures to justify our behavior?
- Balaam wanted the benefits, but he wasn’t willing to bend his knee to Yahweh.
- Are there areas of our lives where we want the benefits of a deep relationship with Christ but we’re not willing to put in the work to get there?
- God will do the unexpected to pursue his ends including giving speech to a donkey.
Deliverance to Darkness – 2 Peter 2:17-22
(John 4:13-14; 1 Pet 2:16; 2 Cor 3:17; James 5:19-20; Gen 3:1)
- Encouraging more sin to gain more grace is a lie and not the gospel.
- Are there areas you feel enslaved to yourself or enslaved to other desires?
- Head knowledge ≠ heart knowledge.
TRUTH
(John 14:6; Rom 3:23; Rom 6:23; John 3:16; 1 Pet 2:24; Eph 2:8-9; Rom 10:9-10; John 10:28; Job 1:21; John 16:33)
- We must know the truth to recognize the lies.
- John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
