For this week’s episode, Ishara chose to read aloud Big Hero 6, written by Laura Hitchcock, illustrated by Victoria Ying and Mike Yamada, and designed by Alfred Giuliani. Ishara reflects on what she learned during her field trip to the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian on Indigenous Peoples Day, and also explores the long history of Halloween and how it is celebrated in other parts of the world. For both of these October holidays, Ishara draws on their shared themes of gratitude and grace, and uses these as a lens to read and understand Big Hero 6. Ishara encourages kids of all ages to recognize the hero within themselves and to honor the memories of loved ones who have passed on by remembering the sacrifices they made. Happy Halloween to all the listeners of Ishara’s Reading Podcast!
