In Chapter 53, we find that the Bennet household is consumed by the arrival and subsequent departure of Mr. Wickham and the youngest Bennet sister, Lydia. The undeniable charm and disarming warmth of Mr. Wickham has snaked its way around the affections of the entire family, blinding their judgement and softening their criticisms. Yet, the note of sorrow and melancholia that permeates the air during their departure is lifted by the electrifying news of the imminent arrival of the much-beloved Mr. Bingley. The commotion and flutter of excitement that permeates the Bennet household at this announcement leaves them in a state of breathless anticipation and hopeful expectation.
Chapter 54 brings with it the delightful arrival of the handsome Mr. Bingley and his solemn friend, Mr. Darcy. The air in the room feels thick with unsaid words and unfulfilled desires, especially from Elizabeth’s end who has nothing but questions for Mr. Darcy. Yet, the chapters’ most satisfying and heart-warming aspect is the rekindling of admiration seen in Mr. Bingley’s eyes for Jane Bennet, replacing the tension of unexpressed expectations and unsettled feelings. The evening ends with an unforeseen separation and an unsatiated craving for more interaction; however, the anticipation of future meetings leaves the Bennet household, especially Jane and Lizzie, in a state of hopeful expectation.
