The governess awakes to find Flora's bed empty, causing her to panic. However, she soon discovers that the child is standing by the window, gazing outside. When questioned, Flora answers with an air of innocence, but the protagonist can't shake the feeling that the child is lying. This prompts her to frequently wander the halls at night, searching for the mysterious Quint, who never reappears in the house. Instead, she discovers a woman sitting on the stairs, but the figure vanishes before she can confront her.
One night, she wakes up and finds Flora once again at the window, this time peering out at the moonlit lawn. The protagonist decides to sneak out of the room and find another window from which she can observe what Flora is looking at. She chooses a room in the old tower, from where she sees a figure standing on the lawn, apparently looking up at something above her. To her shock and horror, she realizes that the figure is not the menacing Quint, but young Miles himself. The chilling revelation leaves her feeling nauseous and questioning what is truly going on in the house.
