On this episode of TheFemmeCast, I chat with author Caroline Nadine Helsing about her new book, Unapologetic: Tales of the Original Party Crasher. The book is based on the life of her mother who recently passed away, and was written as a celebration of her mother and her incredible story. It is also a poignant diary of how Caroline moved through her own grief of losing her.
A strong, larger than life character who was overflowing with self-confidence, Caroline’s mother was the kind of woman who would regularly crash Hollywood parties and cozy up to some of its biggest celebrities. She met many of Hollywood's A-listers including Warren Beatty, Steve McQueen, Joan Crosby, Kirk Douglas, Candice Bergen, Paul Newman, Julie Andrews, John Huston, and Mr. & Mrs. Franklin Roosevelt Jr.
On today's show, Caroline recounts some of her favorite memories about her mother, including the night they crashed Dolly Parton’s restaurant in Hawaii. She also discusses the process of supporting her dad through his grief, while still grieving herself. This included having to clear out her mother’s room after she had passed away. A room that was filled with her most treasured possessions and dearest memories. But in the process, she learned so much more about her mother and the woman she was. As a result, she felt closer and more connected to her than ever before. She also became much closer with her dad and one of her mothers dearest friends in the process.
Caroline was inspired to write the book when she took a journey to New York City with her mother’s ashes, visiting some of her mother’s favorite places. It literally started as a simple practice of writing the little fragments of her mother’s story as she uncovered them along the way, as a way of helping herself move through her own grief, while at the same time putting together her mothers story as though it were pieces of a puzzle. Little did she know it would eventually become a book.
