When the pandemic slowed the world to a standstill in 2020, Julian Loue, who was working as an insurance adjuster in Greenville, found himself with extra time on his hands. He had previously picked up making his own sourdough bread as a hobby, but when friends and neighbors started asking to buy bread from him in the midst of COVID-19, this hobby snowballed into baking and selling dozens, and then hundreds of loaves out of his home oven. Julian’s zeal for learning and improving his bread combined with his upbringing in France around true French bakeries to create some amazing baked goods, and before long he was selling out at the Travelers Rest farmer’s market every single week. Now, Rise Bakery has become the Upstate’s premier, authentic French-style bakery in West Greenville.
