DAY 288 — “HEARTS BURNING WITHIN US” 🔥
📖 Luke 24 | The Story of Scripture
Sometimes our greatest discouragement doesn't come because God has failed to fulfill His promises. It comes because we've misunderstood what God actually promised.
In Luke 24, two disciples are walking the road to Emmaus, overwhelmed with disappointment. Jesus has been crucified. Their expectations have been shattered. And the future they imagined seems to have disappeared.
They make one heartbreaking statement:
“But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel.” — Luke 24:21
We had hoped.
Those three words reveal hearts struggling to understand what God is doing.
But here's what makes this account so incredible: While they believed their hope was dead, the risen Savior was walking right beside them!
They thought the cross represented defeat. But the cross was God's plan for victory.
They thought Jesus had failed to deliver Israel. But Jesus had accomplished something infinitely greater—redemption from sin and victory over death.
And what did Jesus do to restore their understanding?
He opened the Scriptures.
Beginning with Moses and the Prophets, Jesus explained how the entire story of redemption pointed to Him.
Then, after recognizing the risen Christ, the disciples declared:
🔥 “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” — Luke 24:32
Don't miss this!
Their hearts weren't burning because of emotional manipulation, impressive music, or some manufactured spiritual experience.
Their hearts burned because the truth of God's Word opened their understanding of Jesus Christ!
Church, we need to remember something important:
We don't need a new revelation to strengthen our faith. We need a deeper understanding of the revelation God has already given us.
We don't need a different Savior. We need to see our Savior more clearly through Scripture.
And sometimes, when life doesn't unfold the way we expected, we need to be reminded that God's faithfulness isn't measured by whether He fulfills our expectations, but by whether He fulfills His promises.
Those disciples began their journey discouraged and defeated. They ended it with renewed understanding, restored hope, and a message they couldn't keep to themselves.
Why?
Because the tomb was empty, Jesus was alive, and God's Word had proven true!
Here's my challenge for you today:
Don't allow your circumstances to interpret Scripture for you. Allow Scripture to help you understand your circumstances.
The same Jesus who conquered the grave is the Savior revealed in every part of God's unfolding story of redemption.
And when we truly understand who He is, our hope no longer rests in what we think God should do, but in what Christ has already accomplished.
🔥 A heart that burns for Christ must be a heart grounded in the Word of Christ.
