Human history is filled with stories of selfishness—self-preservation, self- centeredness, self-exaltation. Jesus reveals the eventual destruction that comes when we make self-seeking our goal and purpose. He exposes that chasing fame and fortune eventually lead to feelings of emptiness, purposelessness, and hopelessness. There is no greater tragedy than gaining the whole world while losing the soul (Mark 8:36).
