Baptism is a public declaration that you made privately between you and the Lord.
Baptism in Greek
1. to dip repeatedly, to immerse, to submerge (of vessels sunk)
2. to cleanse by dipping or submerging, to wash, to make clean with water, to wash one's self, bathe
3. to overwhelm
When getting baptized, no one else should make the decision for you, its between you and God!
What are some qualifications of baptism?
#1 Repent
#2 Accept Jesus as personal Lord & Savior
#3 Believe in Him
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38)
Here are a few common questions regarding baptism that we may often hear or wonder.
#1 Do you need to be baptized in water to be saved?
-No
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)
#2 Can a newborn be baptized?
-We can dedicate the baby. They can get baptized when they make a personal decision to a point of reasoning.
#3 Can someone get baptized again?
-You can get baptized again.
There is no where in scripture that doesn't say you can't get baptized in water again.
#4 Why be baptized in water?
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. (Matthew 28:19-20)
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?” 15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him. (Matthew 3:13-15)
#5 What does baptism signify?
Immersion symbolizes death & burial with our Lord Jesus Christ.
Baptism = DIP
Raising up from water = resurrection
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:1-4)
