1 Samuel 15-17 tells the story of Saul, the first king of Israel, and his disobedience to God's commands. In chapter 15, God commands Saul to completely destroy the Amalekites and all their possessions, but Saul disobeys and spares their king and some of the spoils of war. As a result, God rejects Saul as king.
In chapter 16, God sends Samuel to anoint David, a shepherd boy, as the future king of Israel. David is described as a man after God's own heart.
In chapter 17, David faces the giant Philistine warrior Goliath in battle, trusting in God's strength to defeat him. David's faith in God and fear of God's power, rather than fear of Goliath, ultimately leads to his victory.
Throughout these chapters, the importance of fearing God and obeying His commands is emphasized. Saul's disobedience and fear of the people rather than God leads to his downfall, while David's trust in God and fear of His power leads to his success.
