2 Samuel 1 begins with David receiving the news of Saul and Jonathan's deaths. He laments the loss of his dear friend, Jonathan, and honors Saul despite their turbulent history. An Amalekite comes to David and claims to have killed Saul, expecting to be rewarded. David, however, has him executed for daring to harm the Lord's anointed.
In 2 Samuel 2, we see the beginning of a long and bitter war between David's faction, Judah, and Ish-bosheth's faction, the rest of Israel. David is anointed as king over Judah, and Abner, the commander of Saul's army, defects to Ish-bosheth's side. Abner and Joab, David's commander, meet in battle, and Abner kills Joab's brother. Joab retaliates by killing Abner.
Chapter 3 continues the story of the war between David and Ish-bosheth's factions. Ish-bosheth accuses Abner of sleeping with one of Saul's concubines, which leads to a falling out between them. Joab takes advantage of the situation and kills Abner, hoping to gain favor with David. However, David publicly mourns Abner's death and distances himself from Joab.
In 2 Samuel 4, we see the assassination of Ish-bosheth by two of his own men, Baanah and Rechab. They present Ish-bosheth's head to David, hoping for a reward, but David has them executed for their treachery. With Ish-bosheth dead, David is anointed as king over all of Israel. However, he still faces challenges from within his own ranks, as Joab and others continue to pursue their own agendas.
