Genesis 16-18 tells the story of Hagar, a slave girl who belonged to Sarah, the wife of Abraham. Sarah is unable to have children and asks Hagar to bear a child for her and her husband. Hagar becomes pregnant with a son, Ishmael, but Sarah later gives birth to Isaac. Sarah becomes jealous of Hagar and her son and orders them to be banished from the household. God speaks to Hagar in the wilderness, promising to make her son the father of a great nation. The chapter concludes with God renewing his promise to Abraham that his descendants will be as numerous as the stars in the sky.
