In the Book of Job, Chapter 14 finds Job reflecting on the brevity and frailty of human life. He asserts that humans are born to suffer and die and that there is no hope of escape.
In Chapter 15, Job's friend Eliphaz responds, accusing Job of speaking presumptuously and lacking understanding. He insists that the wicked will be punished and the righteous will be rewarded.
In Chapter 16, Job continues to defend himself, accusing his friends of comforting him with empty words and of being the cause of his suffering. He speaks of his own pain and the betrayal of his friends. He asserts that God has become his enemy and has caused him great suffering.
