In the Book of Job, Chapter 17 finds Job in despair, asserting that he is surrounded by mockers and that his friends have become his enemies. He speaks of his desire for a witness to plead his case before God and of his hope for a future resurrection.

In Chapter 18, Job's friend Bildad responds, insisting that the wicked will be destroyed and will not have a future.

In Chapter 19, Job again defends himself, asserting that he is innocent and that his friends have wronged him. He speaks of his hope in a future resurrection and in a redeemer who will stand up for him.

In Chapter 20, Job's friend Zophar responds, insisting that the wicked will not prosper and will face punishment in this life or the next.
