In the Book of Job, Chapter 1 introduces Job, a wealthy man who lives in the land of Uz and is "blameless" and "upright," fearing God and avoiding evil. Satan challenges Job's piety, claiming that he is only righteous because God has blessed him with wealth and prosperity. God allows Satan to test Job's faith by taking away all of his possessions and afflicting him with painful sores. In Chapter 2, Satan attacks Job again, this time afflicting him with painful sores from head to toe. Job's wife urges him to curse God and die, but Job refuses, saying, "Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?" In Chapters 3 and 4, Job curses the day of his birth and wishes he had died at birth, while Eliphaz, one of Job's friends, tries to console him, but instead accuses him of sinning and suggests that his sufferings are punishment from God. In Chapter 5, Eliphaz continues to argue that Job's sufferings are a result of his own sin and advises him to seek God and find relief.
