Leviticus 14-16 is a section of the Old Testament of the Bible that primarily deals with instructions for the purification of people and objects that have become unclean or impure. The following is a brief description of each chapter:
Leviticus 14: This chapter describes the procedures for the purification of a person who has recovered from a skin disease, such as leprosy. The process involves the use of various sacrificial offerings and rituals, and it is overseen by a priest.
Leviticus 15: This chapter provides instructions for dealing with bodily discharges that render a person unclean. The chapter discusses the different types of discharges and the required purification rituals for each.
Leviticus 16: This chapter outlines the ritual of the Day of Atonement, which was an annual event in which the High Priest would enter the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle or Temple to make atonement for the sins of the people. The chapter provides detailed instructions for the sacrificial offerings and rituals that were to be performed on this day.
In the New Testament, the apostle Paul describes Jesus as the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of humanity, and he compares Jesus' death and resurrection to the rituals performed on the Day of Atonement. According to Paul, Jesus' death on the cross represents the final sacrifice that fully atones for the sins of humanity, and his resurrection is the ultimate proof of his victory over sin and death.
The book of Hebrews also makes the connection between the Day of Atonement and Jesus' sacrifice, describing Jesus as the High Priest who entered the true Holy of Holies in heaven to make atonement for our sins. The author of Hebrews argues that Jesus' sacrifice is far superior to the sacrifices offered on the Day of Atonement, because it is a once-for-all sacrifice that completely cleanses us from our sins and makes us righteous before God.
Therefore, the Day of Atonement described in Leviticus 16 ultimately points to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who takes away our sins and reconciles us to God. Through his sacrifice, we can have forgiveness of sins and eternal life, and we no longer need to rely on the symbolic sacrificial offerings of the Old Testament to approach God.
