Psalm 133 is a short but powerful psalm that celebrates the goodness and beauty of unity among God's people. The psalm begins with the declaration that it is "good and pleasant" when brothers dwell together in unity, using the metaphor of oil running down Aaron's beard and onto his garments as a symbol of the blessing that comes from unity.
In the New Testament, the concept of unity is also emphasized, particularly in the writings of the apostle Paul. In his letter to the Ephesians, for example, Paul urges believers to "maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace" (Ephesians 4:3). He goes on to describe how Christ has brought people of different backgrounds and cultures together as one body in Him.
Furthermore, Jesus Himself prayed for the unity of His followers in John 17:20-23, asking that they may all be one as He and the Father are one. This prayer highlights the importance of unity in the church and its connection to the character and mission of God.
Thus, Psalm 133 speaks to the fundamental truth that unity is not just desirable but essential for God's people. The unity that is based on love and obedience to Christ brings blessing and honor to the Lord and allows His people to experience the fullness of His presence and power.
