Project Paperclip scooped up a bunch of German scientists at the end of WW2, including Wernher Von Braun. He developed the V2 Rocket for Hitler and then for the United States military, but Von Braun REALLY wanted to go to space. He led NASA's development of the Saturn V rocket that sent the Apollo missions to the moon.
