What we are not fuxing with today is not knowing our names. Like our for real names. Not the name your mama gave you Sis, but your NAME. We return again to the mellifluous words of Cole Arthur Riley in This Here Flesh, specifically the chapter entitled Calling, where she queries, using the words of Reverend Howard Thurman, "Who Are You?"
Sis, I have been called to do a Thing. This Thing has always been present in my soul, and knew me before I was born. I look at my origins, my ties to my great-grandmother, and the themes that continue to show up in my life, even though I have tried so hard over the years to stamp out those themes with well appointed mirages of me. Mirages that were continuously affirmed, thus causing me great confusion and movement further away from the genuine me. So Sis, once you tire from the ache of putting your mirage on display, will you tell me what you name is?
