Description

This one is personal, and it was another Uppity Black Woman celebrity who provided the sh*t we not fuxing with. Today, we focus on Ms. Keke Palmer, our melanin sister who has been doing the thing. Her credits include both Hollywood and Broadway. She was actually my daughter’s first Broadway show when she played Cinderella. Needless to say I love me some Keke. So it pierced my heart when I learned that Ms. Keke recently filed to obtain a temporary restraining order to get protection from her former partner, and the father of her child, Darius Jackson. While the accusations still remain as allegations (I am a lawyer by trade so allegations is the word) I was saddened, but not surprised by the voices of the peanut gallery when news of the TRO became public. Here again, the Uppity Black Woman was criticized for doing something about her abuse. There was almost no space given to Ms. Keke to deal with her matter in a soft landing place. The thought that this Uppity Black Woman would ever be in situation in which she could possibly be abused, was not only unbelievable for many, but also unfathomable - because surely Ms. Keke don’t take no sh*t. I can tell you from my own personal experience, as an Uppity Black Woman, who on the surface would appear to not take sh*t, I too was subject to domestic violence. The strength it took to make it public so that I could keep both my spiritual and physical life was immense. So when I see the reaction from others, towards Keke, it makes me ponder what encouragement do our fellow Sisters receive to move out of these cycles of violence. Black Women deserve the right to be free from violence and we can no longer neglect the needs of Uppity Black Women who experience domestic violence. Sis, as the Queen so eloquently puts it, “one of the major tasks black women face as we work for emotional healing is to understand more fully what love is so that we do not imagine that love and abuse can be simultaneously present in our lives.” Sis you are loved, and you are deserving of love and peace. If you are in a situation in which you are being subjected to abuse, please speak up and reach out for help. I love you.
