Description

In this episode of the Branding Democrats Podcast, Ken, Daryl, and Gabriella  discuss the phenomenon of millennials shifting toward the right politically. We focus our conversation on why people may become more conservative as they age. Ken and Daryl emphasize on how this is a product of successful Republican branding, where there is a widespread view that Republican policy is better for one’s personal wealth. While this is far from the truth, Democrats have failed to effectively communicate their economic achievements. People associate Democrats with taxes, but why have taxes been branded as a bad thing? In our conversation, we stress the importance of showing the benefits of taxes and where people’s hard earned money goes. Democrats can reframe the conversation around taxes as an investment in the community. Daryl gives the example of Denmark where higher taxes are accepted due to visible benefits.

To appeal to millennials Democratic branding needs to emphasize:

Gabby brings up how the modern day gun crisis is an example of how Dems and Republicans view freedom differently. While Republicans argue that gun regulations infringe on their freedom, Democrats should emphasize that gun regulations protect freedom from the threat of mass shootings in public settings.

Democrats have an opportunity to appeal to the younger generations, by focusing theri campaigning on gun safety and other progressive issues such as abortion, climate change, and LGBTQ rights. We argue that Gen Z tends to be progressive, but it is important to maintain their support as they age by promoting Democratic values and showing that Democrats fight for the people. Democrats should brand themselves as authentic, caring for the American people, and fighting against corporate interests. Through these branding reforms, Democrats can not only capture more of the millennial vote, but they can connect with voters across generations.
