Opening verses: Acts 19:1-7
A LIMITED BAPTISM (pg. 141-144)
“How could these people become Christians without receiving the Holy Spirit? We are told plainly that these
people were disciples. Whenever that word is used in the book of Acts, it always refers to Christians. These people
believed John the Baptist, who said the Messiah would soon come and baptize believers with the Holy Spirit. He
showed Jesus of Nazareth to them, saying He was the Lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world.
The Ephesians believed this, but from that point their knowledge fizzled out. They did not know that the Holy
Spirit had been poured out on the church in Jerusalem on Pentecost. They did not know that, from that time on,
every Christian had the Holy Spirit, or we might say that the Holy Spirit had every Christian.” Pg. 142
THE MISSING GIFTS (Pages 144 - 150)
The believers in Ephesus lacked the important gifts and operations of the Spirit. They knew something about the
indwelling of the Spirit, though perhaps not in those terms. They had experienced faith, repentance, discipleship,
and fellowship, but they lacked the following three graces: Pg. 144
1. The full assurance of faith granted by the Spirit.
2. The Spirit-given power to testify.
3. The gift of understanding and speaking in foreign languages.

1. The gift of discernment.
2. The gift of illumination.
3. The gifts of evangelism.
4. The gift of assurance.
5. The gift of growth.
