Opening verses: John 3:1-8
What we know about Nicodemus (page 70)
1. Nicodemus was born into the right family
2. He was a Pharisee
3. He had the best education
4. He was a member of the Sanhedrin
5. He was a teacher of Israel
Why is this list important? How does knowing this help with understanding the interaction and truths of the passage?
We all must be born again; but what is involved with being born again? [Ezekiel 36:25-26 is helpful to consider]
1. You must be born of water
2. You must be born of the Spirit
In John 3:6 we read: “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” What is true about those born simply of the flesh? [page 75]
1. His mind is hostile to God and cannot please God (Romans 8:7-8)
2. He cannot come to the King (John 6:44)
3. He can produce only the works of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-21)
What is true of those born of the Spirit? [pages 76-80]
1. The new birth is a sovereign work of the Spirit (John 3:8; James 1:18)
2. The new birth is an effective work of the Spirit ~ it produces results [Thomas works through various verses from the book of 1 John ~ page 78]
3. The new birth is a mysterious work of the Spirit (John 3:8-9)
