Geoff Thomas: The Holy Spirit – Chapter 12: “The Preaching of Pentecost
Opening verses: Acts 2:12-16
“To understand Pentecost we must turn to Peter, the authorized, inspired interpreter and witness of what happened.”
- Pg. 131
THE CHURCH UNDER ATTACK
Immediately after the Spirit of God came upon the church, the believers were attacked. Crowds in the temple heard
the disciples speaking in languages they had not known before and tried to find some ordinary explanation for this
extraordinary miracle. They said, “They’ve been drinking. These disciples have been on a binge and are drunk.”
Pg. 131
PETER’S DEFENSE OF THE CHURCH Pages. 132-140
The early church was a humble group of people who were overwhelmed with what they had heard and seen of the
Lord Jesus during His three-year ministry. Now they became beneficiaries of the Holy Spirit. And Peter, as their
authorized spokesman, defended their actions, saying, “For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the
third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; and it shall come to pass in the last days,
saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh” (vv. Acts 2:15–17).
Read Joel’s Prophecy
““And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall
prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female
servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit. “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and
fire and columns of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome
day of the Lord comes. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For
in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall
be those whom the Lord calls.”Joel 2:28–32, ESV
It is being fulfilled in the following ways:
1. Pentecost is a day of extraordinary events
2. Pentecost was Christ’s day of glory.

“Peter says. “We saw Him on the hill of ascension, where He blessed us, then rose to heaven. Now He is exalted to
the right hand of God. He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now
see and hear (v. 33). This is the Lord’s great and glorious day.” Pg. 137
